About

Welcome to the Riverland

The Riverland is home to some of Australia’s most revolutionary wine production, spanning from commercial and large-scale operations to boutique and small producers, growing 100+ wine grape varieties and areas adorned with old vines.

A History of Innovation

It is the birthplace of the bag-in-box, reinvented around the world as a premium wine package. The region is also a significant producer of keg wine, low and no alcohol wines, and was the first in Australia to commit to recycled PET packaging.

Proudly Riverland

The Riverland produces wine grapes for over 80 premium winemakers who proudly identify the region as their source. This unconventional and revolutionary spirit is symbolised in the diversity of styles produced.

Uniquely Australian Styles

These wines are often made in the Riverland and beyond, with producers identifying Riverland GI on their labels. Styles include premium wines, natural and Pet Nat, 100% organic ranges, old vine wines, and a range of unconventional varietals and blends.

Sustainable Growing Conditions

With incredibly forgiving growing conditions and largely dry weather reducing pests and disease, the Riverland can commit to more sustainable and organic production, using lower intervention to control disease while remaining phylloxera-free.

A Global Wine Hub

The Riverland also hosts the Southern Hemisphere’s largest wine processing facility in Berri, making it Australia’s leading producer of unpackaged wine. This wine is bottled or bagged-in-box in-market across Europe, North America and Asia, resulting in some of the lowest carbon footprint wines on the planet.

Australia’s Leading Wine Region

The Riverland is Australia’s largest wine region by volume produced, and second only to the Barossa Valley in the value of wine grape crush. It produces 32% of Australia’s grapes and 14% of the nation’s crush value. 77% of grapes are converted to wine within the region, with 23% processed elsewhere.
