Riverland History
The Riverland occupies the traditional lands of generations of the Ngaiawang, Ngawait, Nganguruku, Erawirung, Ngintait, Ngaralte and Ngarkat people, where the river runs free and nature lives in harmony.

Key Milestones
1830
White settlers arrive. The Riverland region is visited by Captain Charles Sturt on his voyage along the Murray River, and overland by Hawdon and Bonny.
Late 1800's
An irrigation settlement is established in Renmark by the Chaffey Brothers, marking the beginning of Riverland’s vineyards.
1919
The Soldier Settlement Bill is passed, bringing European immigrants who bring with them a deep knowledge of wine and farming.
1920's-1950's
The wine industry gains momentum. The Berri Co-operative Winery and Distillery is founded, and the Loxton Co-operative Winery records its first crush.
1990's
Berri Renmark and Thomas Hardy and Sons merge to become BRL Hardy, developing brands such as Banrock Station. CCW Co-operative becomes the preferred grape supplier.
2010's
Accolade Wines is born and the Riverland becomes known as the powerhouse of Australian wine, with the largest winery in the Southern Hemisphere in full operation.
2020's
The Riverland now produces more than 100 wine grape varieties and is perfectly positioned to meet global trends. Small and boutique producers lead the way in emerging and unconventional styles — maverick, smart and creative.
